Job Description

Filterra, a division of Americast, Inc., is seeking an ambitious individual to work in the Ashland, VA office. This individual will work directly with the Research & Development Manager in order to complete the tasks below. Filterra is an advanced bioretention stormwater treatment system that encompasses proprietary engineered media in a natural system.

Core responsibilities & duties include:

• Run laboratory experiments with chemicals and reagents according to scientific method
• Write technical reports (ex. experimental designs and summaries based on lab and field experiments)
• Follow water quality sampling procedures and compliance field sampling
• Schedule and perform QA/QC sampling and testing of all natural components of Filterra system, and keep regular contact with media suppliers
• Source different media gradations and components around the country from various suppliers
• Use various lab and field analytical equipment related to soil and water quality testing
• Run lab and field flow tests for media QA/QC, sourcing and development using flow meters, hydrants, hoses, water trucks, etc…
• Investigate field sites to properly evaluate site issues
• Investigate and test for new product development based on knowledge of media unit processes
• Data entry and data analysis using basic and advanced functions in Microsoft Excel
• Internet research (search engines, journal article searches, etc…) to gather information and review studies related to research on Filterra system
• Schedule R&D maintenances and ensure maintenances are performed
• Assist R&D Manager with various large-scale monitoring projects, and work with third-party laboratories to schedule sampling and enter laboratory reports
• Provide periodic reports containing summaries and graphs to R&D Manager based on data generated from various experiments
• Lab housekeeping

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Experience running laboratory and field experiments and following general laboratory safety requirements
• General understanding of stormwater runoff (ex. runoff characteristics, pollutants of concern, treatment processes, regulations)
• Statistical knowledge preferred.
• Ability to extrapolate data to show trends and provide recommendations based on results
• Multi-tasked and detail-oriented
• Can work independently with little supervision
• Both indoor and outdoor work, sometimes in extreme weather conditions (ex. rain, heat, cold)
• Sound computer literacy in Microsoft Office software and the Internet; especially using calculation functions in Microsoft Excel and creating graphs.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to adequately follow instructions, both verbal and written
• Good time management skills
• Some physical labor (capable of lifting 50 lbs)

Education, Certifications and/or Other Requirements

Education or Other Requirements:

B.S. degree in science field such as environmental science, biology, chemistry, soils, hydraulics, meteorology, or related science field.
