Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED)

The US Green Building Council (USGBC) created the “Leadership in Energy and Environment Design” (LEED) rating system as set of guidelines to enhance occupant well-being, improve environmental performance, and increase the economic return of buildings.  The LEED system encourages the implementation of established and innovative new practices based upon technologies for green, sustainable building construction and management.

Earning LEED points with Americast® Reinforced Concrete Pipe

The USGBC LEED Rating System does not certify products to be used in LEED projects.  Rather, the system sets forth a design and construction process in which a product or practice can help the project achieve LEED points arising from the fact that a product or practice possesses specific qualities that are considered by USGBC as ‘green’ or contributing to the sustainability of the project.  No product can be LEED certified.  But, qualifying products can help the project secure LEED points though its ability to satisfy LEED requirements.  It is the producer who is responsible for certifying that the applicable LEED requirements have been met.

The LEED Rating System addresses building operation, building maintenance, building design, development practices, and construction materials/delivery.Most applicable to precast concrete products are the LEED rating criteria under New Construction and Major Renovation (LEED-NC).  LEED-NC points are awarded under six categories:
  • Site Sustainability (SS) 14 LEED-NC Points Available
  • Water Efficiency (WE) 5 LEED-NC Points Available
  • Energy and Atmosphere (EA) 17 LEED-NC Points Available
  • Materials and Resources (MR) 13 LEED-NC Points Available
  • Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ) 15 LEED-NC Points Available
  • Innovation in Design (ID) 5 LEED-NC Points Available
